The Mops Announce New LP Old Light

“Where do I place all this anger I face if the stars are but ghosts of old light?” That’s the driving question behind Old Light, the new album from The Mops. The NYC-based chamber folk quartet’s upcoming release explores themes of grief, love, friendship, political anxiety, and collective healing. 

The 12-track LP encapsulates the experience of feeling the world moving under your feet as you grow into your late 20s. Old Light functions as a tribute to best friends, loved ones lost, and a musical home once found in The Owl Music Parlor, a now-shuttered Brooklyn venue.

The Mops’ ten years as an independent band shine through on Old Light, which was recorded live in a living room by engineer Matt Labozza (Spirit Was, Trace Mountains). Their work as hosts of an artist residency in Ontario, Canada inform the record’s confessional, reflective lead single “Maurice” (out Aug. 7 on Bandcamp), a eulogy for a flightless goose. 

With intricate folk arrangements and shining, incisive lyrics, Old Light is The Mops all grown up. 

Old Light is out September 4th via Blissed Out Records.
